Devils in Disguise

After the party is reunited they make a mad dash up the levels the come to a door and are ushered in by 5 human knights who block the entrance to seal in some of the unidentifiable creatures the players encountered on lower levels. The devils attack the players but are eventually defeated. The building is beginning to collapse toward the end of the battle. After the devils are dealt with a wheezing man seems to rise from the dead and shambles towards the adventurers. He is felled several times but is relentless in his approach. After some time the players decide to lock him in the room and flee, as the building they are in is obviously falling apart. After locking the abomination on the room, the players make for the next and final level. As they emerge from the rubble they see the cause of the collapse: a Balor swinging his mighty whip upon the wreckage. It spots them as they run out of the collapsing building. As they emerge they see it swat at a rider on a horse barely missing. However his mighty whip hits a tree but instead of shattering, the tree instantly turns to ash and bursts into flame. The PC’s are deafened from the whipcrack. The heat is overwhelming as the air from the crack of his whip blows passed them. As the players run from the Balor it gives chase for a little bit until a blast of energy hits it in the back and it turns to see what hit it. It’s the arch mage! He fires another blast and shouts to the travelers to run and he will hold off the beast. As the players are running through the forest as fast as they can they begin to hear footsteps crashing behind them through the underbrush. As they draw nearer they hear panicked shouting. “Get this bleeding thing off my head!” “I don’t know how right now but be godsdamned glad at least i killed it… probably!” The footsteps belong to none other than Roderick and Baelfire. The two catch up to and begin to pass the characters. As they pass they look over and make eye contact and say “HEEEYY!!” Baelfire has a giant floppy leech looking thing over his head and he is covered in blood. A big chunk is cut out of the leech and he can see partially out of the hole. They begin to pull ahead and Rodderick shouts to Baelfire to shout to the group to follow them because they have a plan of escape.

The First Phylactery

After 3 days Aurane the Arch Mage tells the adventurers that the phylactery can be destroyed but he is unsure of what that will do to the surrounding world as such a disruption in the lich’s power could send it crumbling into oblivion, killing them in the process or simply freeing them. Either way in order to return to the world it must be done. When the first phylactery is destroyed, there is a cataclysmic explosion and the characters are reduced to ash. After a few moments the players are unable to move or see but they have thoughts. Then they can slowly wiggle their toes and have blurred vision one by one they wake up. As they awaken they find themselves strapped to a table in a room attached to some tubes and IV like devices. The players realize that these are life support systems and it is safe to disconnect. They are alone. There is a great commotion around them and they can hear the sounds of groaning, fighting, and death all around them. When Kender escapes he is confronted by demons and humans fighting in the corridors. He must find his friends and escape. After the others are free they must fight their way to the surface and find out what is going on.

Traversing the Desert

The adventurers land in the desert and are soon approached by a caravan of elves who decide that they will escort the party to the city of Mazark if they will help guar their caravan against bandits on the way. The caravan is indeed attacked by bandits who were decently armed. One of them was carrying a cursed sword that drained all of Kender’s strength when he touched it. After the battle the players made it safely to the city but the caravaners betrayed them and when they were about to lose the battle they called the guards and told them that these “outsiders” were causing trouble. The guards sentenced the players and the caravaners to a round in the arena to settle their differences. They players won the arena competition. After the arena, the players collected their earnings and took the cursed sword to the nearest temple The priests take the sword in order to destroy it or learn more about it. The players turn the sword in to the priests under the assumption that the sword will be returned to them the next day. However, when the players went back to get the sword the temple was rearranged and the priests had no recollection of the party. After going back a second time the priests actually do remember them. The players eventually realize they are being followed by a cloaked figure who turns out to be a projection of Archmage Traevus trying to contact them from the outside world. He is discovered and ‘killed’ by accident just before his identity is revealed. The party later uses a mage in a magic shop to find Traevus and pull him through a portal to where the party is. The ritual succeeds and Traevus is pulled through the portal and there is an explosion. The mage who owns the magic shop is killed in the explosion so Traevus takes his visage and explains that the lich must have put a spell on on them and projected their consciousnesses into a sort of ‘dream world’. If the players are able to destroy the phylactery they might be able to break the spell and be able to wake up and then he can also be transported to the research facility on the outskirts of Silver City.

The Canaba Swamps

The party continues onward to leave the city and head for the swamp. During the walk they learn that Rodderick and Baelfire are traking them via a scrying ritual projected through a white raven. They are taking orders from “the Boss”. They must have missed the bandits but they can track them through the swampy area. The party has a run in with some swamp slimes and a gelatinous cube.

Rest before heading to the swamp

During their sleep each of the adventurers had a disturbing nightmare involving which seem to try to dissuade them from interacting with a stone pillar or exploring the swamps further.

As they keep exploring the swamp they come to a large magical pillar. As they begin to interact with the pillar, thousands of undead rise from the earth and lumber toward the group and the pillar. The group detected a magical aura around the pillar and when they touched it they were transported to a sweeping desert landscape.
